On canvas, he has immortalized the fortress of Rethymnon.
With his excellent exhibition in the heart of summer the distinguished Rethymno artist and English teacher Fred Featham literally captivated his art-loving fellow citizens. And while the exhibition of wonderful artwork may have taken place in August, its impact is still very much in evidence. And of course, his oil paintings of the Fortezza could not have been displayed in a more ideal place than in the dome-covered artillery building within the walls of the iconic castle that adorns our town. We saw the Fortezza in all its manifestations: at sunset, at pink dawn, with the sea, at close range, at a distance, in all weathers and in magnificent colours. It is no coincidence that some of Fred's amazing paintings will be hosted in a gallery in Rome, the art capital of the country, as they were particularly liked by Italian experts.
The exhibition of paintings of the Fortezza in the Fortezza, which Fred confesses he adores, was visited by many Rethymnians who were deeply impressed. By his side at this exhibition was his beloved wife, Asimenia, well-known to all of us, always a supporter and helper in his work.
Mr Fred Featham amazes the people of Rethymno not only with his talent in painting but for his love for Rethymno and the people of Rethymno, his love of learning, and especially his knowledge of Greek, while he is known for his modesty. Years ago, the artist from “old Albion” and graduate of the Cheltenham School of Fine Arts wanted to participate in Greek secondary education and managed by passing his exams to get his Greek high school diploma with honours.
Later he did a postgraduate degree, and in recent years he has been passionately attending the 'Greek Culture and Language' courses that take place every year at the Lyceum of Greek Women of Rethymnon, at which he continues to be an excellent student, while he is particularly interested in the etymology of ancient Greek words. However, his great passion is painting and this is amply demonstrated by his unique works that adorn the galleries of Rethymno and beyond.
